Jason Derülo (born September 21, 1989 in Miramar, Florida) is an American singer-songwriter, dancer, choreographer, producer and actor signed to JR Rotem's label Beluga Heights. He has written hit singles for acts such as Lil Wayne, Pleasure P, Pitbull, Stat Quo and Birdman. His debut single, Whatcha Say, was released to radio in June 2009. It samples the Imogen Heap song 'Hide And Seek' and debuted at #54 on the Billboard Hot 100, and has since peaked at #4. His debut album is set to be released early 2010.

Op dit moment staat de track Watcha Say van een nieuwe R&B ster aan het firmament, Jason Derülo, in de top 40. Alhoewel ik, inmiddels in mijn dertiger jaren aangekomen, niet zo heel erg meer bij de tijd ben qua top 40, was dit liedje me toch opgevallen. Dit nummer bevat namelijk ("ken ik jou niet ergens van?..") een sample van het liedje Hide & Seek van Imogen Heap. En dat is een liedje wat naar mijn idee toch in een (bizar) groot aantal Duurt Lang categorieën thuis hoort. Een goede reden om ... nieuwe Duurt Lang categorie van: " series soundtrack". De wijze waarop Jason Derülo de Imogen Heap sample gebruikt verdient wat mij betreft veel lof. Sommige critici menen dat hij teveel van dit lied heeft gebruikt als basis voor zijn nummer (vaak een teken van gebrek aan creativiteit), maar de wijze waarop dit nummer het origineel recht aandoet, en, door het meer poppy te maken, waarschijnlijk zelfs een grotere doelgroep het wél laat waarderen, en ook hoe hij deze sample smeuïg vermengt met zijn ... eigen lyrics en flow (en dat is dan toch weer een verdienste van de hergebruiker)... Ik zeg: waren er maar meer van dit soort herbewerkingen in de categorie 'muziek voor de massa'. Jason Derülo scoort er een #1 hit mee in Amerika, en top 3 noteringen in Canada en de UK. Ik ben benieuwd hoe ver deze plaat in Nederland gaat reiken. Dat het nummer al eerder ontdekt is om zijn recycle-waarde bewijst trouwens de remix van DJ Tiësto op Tiësto's In Search of Sunrise 6: Ibiza.
